Embracing Cultural Humility: Understanding Differences in Play Therapy
Description:
In today’s diverse world, every playroom is an opportunity to learn, connect, and grow. This engaging and interactive play therapy training invites play therapists to explore culture not as a checklist to master, but as a meaningful part of the therapeutic relationship. Through discussion, reflection, case examples, and playful exploration, participants will deepen their understanding of how cultural awareness, humility, and curiosity can strengthen the healing process for children and families throughout the play therapy process.
Together, we will examine the concepts of Cultural Competence, Cultural Humility, Cultural Opportunity, and Cultural Comfort, while exploring how these frameworks influence therapeutic presence and the development of a strong therapeutic alliance in the play therapy process. Participants will learn to recognize and respond to cultural opportunities that emerge naturally in the playroom and discover practical ways to create culturally responsive moments that foster safety, connection, and belonging.
Objectives
- Define Cultural Competence, Cultural Humility, Cultural Opportunity and Cultural Comfort that is necessary in the play therapy processÂ
- Identify at least three responses to cultural opportunity in play therapy
- Discuss Therapeutic Alliance and Therapeutic Presence in the context of cultural humility for the play therapist
- Explain how to create opportunities that align with cultural humility in the play therapy process
