Applications of Neurodiversity Affirming Practice in Play Therapy

Friday January 23, 2026 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm CST

Description

Step into the playroom with fresh eyes and a curious mind. This engaging training invites play therapists to explore the many ways neurodiversity shows up in the worlds of children and teens—and how our therapeutic choices can either open doors or quietly close them.

Through discussion, reflection, and practical examples, participants will learn to recognize common expressions of neurodiversity in play therapy, discover affirming interventions that honor different ways of thinking, sensing, and relating, and examine how ableism can subtly (and not so subtly) show up in play therapy practice. We will also unpack the concept of masking—what it looks like in play, why neurodivergent clients may rely on it, and the emotional and relational costs it can carry.

This training blends neuroscience and playfulness to support therapists in creating play therapy environments where children and teens do not have to perform, mask, or “fix” themselves—but instead can show up authentically, safely, and fully as they are.

Objectives

  1. Identify at least three ways neurodiversity is exhibited by children and teens in Play Therapy.
  2. Describe at least three neurodiversity affirming interventions in Play Therapy.
  3. Discuss ableism in play therapy
  4. Describe masking and its effect on a neurodivergent person
